The Peter Jay Sharp Program for Aesthetic and Reconstructive Breast Surgery was established at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center to deliver state-of-the-art techniques in breast reconstruction after mastectomy.   As the leading perforator flap program in Harvard Plastic Surgery, the DIEP flap, SIEA flap, and SGAP flap are the most common types of breast reconstruction that we perform.

We understand that women diagnosed with breast cancer face many choices. In breast reconstruction this can range from breast implants to advanced techniques utilizing the body's own tissue such as the DIEP flap. We offer an individualized approach to each patient and provide the information necessary to make an educated decision. 

Our practice specializes in microsurgical techniques that reconstruct the breast with abdominal tissue, such as the DIEP flap and the SIEA flap.  Both the DIEP flap and the SIEA flap spare the abdominal muscle below and provide the most natural long term cosmetic results. In patients that do not have enough abdominal tissue, alternatives such as the SGAP flap from the buttock can be used as well.
