Breast Reconstruction
Breast Reconstruction

There are many options for reconstruction of the breast after mastectomy. One of the major choices involves the timing for reconstruction.

Reconstruction of the breast at the same time as mastectomy, or an "immediate" reconstruction, has significant psychological benefits. It also saves the patient from an additional operation. A skin sparing mastectomy can be performed in appropriate candidates.

There are advantages to reconstruction at a later date, or a "delayed" reconstruction, especially if it is determined by your breast surgeon that radiation is necessary. If you are a patient who has already had a mastectomy, it is not too late to undergo reconstruction.

Patients who have had previous reconstruction may also benefit from revision and potential replacement with their own tissue.
